The Forest School area has been full of autumn magic as the children headed outdoors to collect conkers and create some beautiful decorations for our feathered friend, Steve the robin!
With the autumn season in full swing, we took the opportunity to explore the natural treasures around us, gathering conkers and thinking about how we could use them to make our outdoor space even more special. The children loved collecting the conkers, noticing their different sizes and enjoying the chance to connect with nature.
Once we had gathered our conkers, it was time to get creative! The children practised using a hand drill to carefully make holes in their conkers, developing their coordination, concentration and practical skills along the way. With guidance and support, they learned how to use the tool safely and patiently, taking their time to get each hole just right.
After drilling, the children threaded their conkers onto string, transforming their natural finds into lovely autumn decorations. It was wonderful to see their determination, growing confidence and excitement as they watched their creations come together.
Our finished decorations will help make the Forest School area a beautiful and welcoming space for everyone to enjoy, especially Steve the robin, who inspired our little project!
Activities like these are a wonderful way for children to develop their fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities and confidence in using real tools, all while enjoying the benefits of being outdoors.
What a lovely way to celebrate autumn, care for our outdoor space and make something special for Steve!
