π° The Great Conker Mystery! π°
Forest School took an unexpected turn this week when the children discovered that some of the beautiful conker decorations had mysteriously disappeared!
The children had carefully collected conkers and used them to make decorations, taking great pride in their creations. When we returned to Forest School this week, we noticed that several were missing. Naturally, this called for an immediate investigation! π
The children began thinking carefully about what might have happened and who could be responsible. They created a list of possible suspects, using their knowledge of the animals and creatures that live in and around our Forest School site. The growing list included squirrels, deer, slugs and bats, as well as the rather unexpected suspect of a giraffe!πΏοΈπ¦ππ¦π¦
This sparked lots of discussion and questioning. The children considered which animals might be able to reach the conkers, which might be interested in them and how they could have been moved. They were encouraged to look closely at their surroundings for clues and to think like real detectives. We decided to take a walk around the whole site and ask all the volunteers if they had spotted any animals which we could add to the list. There were lots of different ideas.
What began as a missing-conker mystery quickly became a wonderful opportunity for problem-solving, reasoning, communication and imaginative thinking. The children listened to one another's ideas, shared theories, considered evidence and worked together to try to solve the mystery.
Most importantly, it gave the children a chance to develop their curiosity about the natural world. They were thinking about the animals that share our Forest School environment and how they might interact with the materials we leave behind.
But the question remainsβ¦
